Causes of a Running Toilet

toiletA toilet that contantly runs can be more than just an annoyance. The average working toilet wastes tons of water every month, but a run-on toilet uses even more. This can be reflected in your water bills. Reeves Family Plumbing in Dallas, Texas, has seen its fair share of problem toilets. Our experts can quickly determine what is causing the toilet to run and efficiently repair it.

There are several reasons behind a toilet running longer than it should.

The first, and most common issue, is a simple fix. The toilet chain may have too much or too little slack. If the chain has too much slack means it’s tucked under the flapper seal allowing water to leak. If the chain has too little slack and the toilet flapper could be held away from the seal. The chain could also be broken, which is easy and quick to replace.

A sticky flush valve is another common problem with toilets. If you find that the water runs only until you wiggle the handle, then perhaps this is the culprit. The linkage between the flush handle and the tank ball will have to be looked at and repaired.

Another possible cause could be a sticky tank ball or flapper valve. This is the issue if either doesn’t fall into the drain properly.

When water is dribbling into the toilet tank, running out the overflow tube into the toilet bowl, and then going down the drain, the cause is generally a maladjusted or damaged float ball. This will probably require the replacement of the float ball.

If none of these problems fit your criteria it is probably caused by ballcock problems. This is a rarer issue, but it does happen where the ballcock won’t close correctly. In this case your Dallas plumbers will need to take a look and determine the proper solution.
